Parish puts caring into action

Care packages for soldiers, bedding for women at Cameron House, and Christmas boxes for children

What does a Canadian soldier serving in Mali like in a care package from home? How about: peanut butter, Mr Freezies, a calendar, some interesting reading, pepperoni sticks, instant oatmeal and maple syrup, to mention a few.

Jim Blakeley delivered several large boxes to the Buckhorn Post Office from where they will be sent to CFB Trenton. The postage to Trenton -- worth $75 -- has been waived by Canada Post for delivery of packages destined to Canadian soldiers. Eunice engaged members of the parish in creating the care packages. These ones are directed to Canadian soldiers who will not otherwise be receiving any package from home.

Marion's SUV cargo compartment and rear seat were stuffed with bedding for women at Cameron House. Cameron House is a shelter for abused women and families in Peterborough. They need bedding for their residence but also the bedding is used to enable the women to make a transition to start over in their own accommodation.

For many years, Helen M has taken the lead in organizing a parish drive to fill Christmas shoe boxes for children throughout the world. Operation Christmas Child is an international effort to provide a special Christmas gift for children in locations where otherwise they would receive little or nothing for Christmas.

Many folks from St Matthew - St Aidan contributed to one or more of these initiatives. Thank you and thanks to those who took the lead for these important projects.
